ABOUT THE ARTIST

“Staring into the clouds has its consequences”, laughs Barbara Peterson, fine artist and oil painter.  “Looking up takes me to another place – to a place of endless possibilities.  Watching the sky gives me a greater perspective. I think about how expansive the atmosphere is.  The sky represents a lack of boundaries or limitations – ultimate freedom in a sense.”

“I love conveying ideas through my work.  I experiment with spacial illusions to create a type of ‘altered dimension’ where landscape and still life meet.  It’s realism, with a twist,” says Peterson.  “I like juxtaposing elements such as a limitless sky with a tightly defined focal area or contrasts such as traditional rendering with modern graphic elements (such as the borders).  As the creator of the painting I’m at liberty to expand or alter dimensions and paint the objects into larger environments.  Ultimately, I’m painting about life in transition; about existing in constricting situations and moving beyond limitations.  As I paint I open up new possibilities.”
